A route's distance is BTS's, in its last year flown. Only the pairs that could be among the top 50 by some measure, over all years or in the year ranking them, are sent to this page, but the shares of a year count every route. Domestic cargo airlines such as FedEx, and airlines flying small aircraft, are only in the data from October 2002 (UPS from 2001), so shares jump when they appear: see known gaps in the data.
